The balance between oxidative and antioxidant processes in the body plays a key role in determining the integrity of our cells and tissues. In this article, we explore the fundamentals of this complex phenomenon and its multifaceted effects on our health.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What exactly is meant by oxidative stress?<br>Definition of Oxidative Stress<\/h2>\n\n<p>Oxidative stress refers to molecules that are highly reactive, contain oxygen, and can cause damage to our cells. They arise when there is an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the body\u2019s ability to neutralize or defuse them. When these excess free radicals react with oxygen, they form ROS (reactive oxygen species). ROS are molecules that contain oxygen and are highly reactive. These include, among others, superoxide radicals, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radicals.    <\/p>\n\n<p>Normally, ROS are byproducts of normal cellular metabolism and are produced in small amounts by the body itself. They play a role in various physiological processes, including the immune system\u2019s defense against pathogens. However, various factors can increase ROS production to unnaturally high levels.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Oxidative stress occurs when the amount of ROS exceeds the body\u2019s ability to neutralize them. This condition differs fundamentally from the normal metabolic process in that it subjects cells to unusual stress. This can lead to damage to cells, proteins, lipids (fats), DNA, and even cell death. It is important to note that oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the body\u2019s ability to keep them in check and break them down. Excessive production of free radicals can result from both exogenous and endogenous factors. Exogenous factors are external stressors. These include environmental pollution, radiation, tobacco smoke, toxins, as well as stress and poor nutrition.    <\/p>\n\n<p>Endogenous factors include inflammation, immune deficiency, pre-existing underlying conditions, or an overload of the metabolic processes in the mitochondria.<\/p>\n\n<p>H\u00e4ufig ist es eine Kombination aus exogenen und endogenen Faktoren die zu oxidativen Stress f\u00fchren. Wenn schlechte, unausgewogene Ern\u00e4hrung bestehend auf Fertiggerichten und Fast-Food auf Stress am Arbeitsplatz oder im Privatleben trifft, ist oxidativer Stress eine m\u00f6gliche Konsequenz. Weiters kann ein hoher Workload dazu f\u00fchren, dass wir mehr Energie ben\u00f6tigen um diesen zu bew\u00e4ltigen. Dies veranlasst unsere Mitochondrien dazu mehr ATP zu produzieren, was zu mehr Ungenauigkeiten und so zur erh\u00f6hten Bildung von freien Radikalen f\u00fchren kann (=\u00dcberlastung der Verbrennungsprozesse der Mitochondrien).   <\/p>\n\n<p>In cases of chronic stress, this can lead to chronic diseases such as diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders, burnout, CFS, and many others. These diseases, in turn, cause oxidative stress in our bodies. As a result, oxidative stress is not only a potential trigger for many diseases but also a concomitant symptom of all of them.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Effects on the Body.<br\/>Short-Term vs. Long-Term<\/h2>\n\n<p>The short-term effects of oxidative stress refer to a temporary increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the body, which can be triggered by various factors such as intense physical activity, infections, or environmental stressors. In this context, ROS can play an important role in various cellular processes, including the defense against pathogens. In moderate amounts, ROS are even necessary to maintain normal cellular functions.  <\/p>\n\n<p>However, even a short-term increase in ROS can have adverse effects. For example, they can damage cell membranes, proteins, and DNA. As a result, the short-term effects of oxidative stress can include inflammation, tissue damage, and temporary organ dysfunction. The body, however, has various mechanisms to cope with oxidative stress and repair the damage.   <\/p>\n\n<p>When the body is exposed to elevated ROS levels over an extended period without sufficient protective mechanisms, it leads to long-term oxidative stress. This can be caused by chronic overexertion, environmental exposure, unhealthy dietary habits, or certain diseases. <\/p>\n\n<p>The long-term effects of persistent oxidative stress can be more severe. For example, oxidative stress has been linked to various chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. ROS can continuously damage cells and tissues, leading to accelerated aging and increased susceptibility to disease. The immune system can be compromised and may no longer function normally. Furthermore, long-term oxidative stress is believed to play a role in the development of inflammation, which in turn can contribute to a variety of health problems.    <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Role in Diseases<\/h2>\n\n<p>As previously mentioned, oxidative stress can be a trigger and\/or a concomitant factor in many diseases. These include: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Burnout:<\/strong> Classified by the WHO since 2022 as a disease that occurs as a result of chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>CFS:<\/strong> Chronic fatigue syndrome is a complex disease that leads to chronic fatigue in those affected. Oxidative stress is particularly pronounced in this condition. <\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Cardiovascular diseases:<\/strong> Oxidative stress plays a role in the development of atherosclerosis, heart failure, and other cardiovascular diseases.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Neurodegenerative diseases:<\/strong> Alzheimer\u2019s, Parkinson\u2019s, and other neurodegenerative diseases are associated with oxidative stress.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Cancer:<\/strong> Oxidative stress can promote the development of cancer by causing genetic mutations and cellular damage. Furthermore, increased oxidative stress can lead to metabolic syndrome, which in turn can contribute to cancer development (Warburg hypothesis). Inflammatory diseases: Chronic oxidative stress is associated with various inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel diseases.  <\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Diabetes:<\/strong> Oxidative stress plays a role in insulin resistance and the complications of diabetes.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Aging processes:<\/strong> Oxidative stress is considered one of the factors that can accelerate the aging process. It is also very interesting to note that viral infections can lead to increased production of oxidative stress. It is important to mention that our immune system uses ROS to fight off pathogens (oxidative burst). However, this reaction can become too intense and go into overdrive. As a result, cells and various tissues can be damaged, which can lead to a loss of function. Some viruses, by infecting host cells, cause these infected cells to produce increased levels of oxidative stress, thereby damaging healthy cells as well as our immune system.     <\/li>\n\n<li><strong>COVID-19: <\/strong>This can be the case with the COVID-19 virus, influenza, Epstein-Barr, and several others. These mechanisms can contribute to the development of post-viral fatigue (e.g., post-COVID). Some scientific publications already suggest that during an infection, protecting the mitochondria is just as important as fighting the virus.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nutrition and Oxidative Stress<\/h2>\n\n<p>Diet plays a central role in regulating oxidative stress. Foods rich in antioxidants\u2014such as berries, dark leafy greens, and certain nuts\u2014can help maintain balance in the body for longer. Conversely, a diet high in trans fats, sugar, and additives such as sweeteners and preservatives can contribute to increased oxidative stress.  <\/p>\n\n<p>A balanced diet should form the foundation for preventing and combating oxidative stress. Of course, not everyone defines a balanced diet in the same way. <\/p>\n\n<p>In general, however, a balanced diet refers to consuming an adequate amount of nutrients to maintain health and promote well-being. It means eating a variety of foods from all food groups in appropriate amounts. A balanced diet should typically follow these principles:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Variety: <\/strong>Eat a wide variety of foods from all food groups, including fruits, vegetables, lean protein, dairy products, and healthy fats. This ensures that you get a wide range of nutrients. <\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Moderation:<\/strong> Be mindful of portion sizes and avoid overeating. Even healthy foods should be consumed in moderation. Balanced Macronutrients: Make sure you consume appropriate amounts of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Each of these macronutrients plays an important role in the body.   <\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Fresh, Whole Foods:<\/strong> Choose fresh, unprocessed foods over highly processed products. Fresh foods often contain more nutrients and fewer additives. <\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Hydration: <\/strong>Drink enough water to meet your body\u2019s fluid needs. Water is essential for many bodily functions. Be mindful of the quality of the water you drink.  <\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Moderate sugar and salt intake:<\/strong> Limit your consumption of added sugar and salt. Too much sugar and salt can lead to various health problems. <\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Taking Individual Needs into Account: <\/strong>Diet should be tailored to individual needs, including age, gender, activity level, and health status. It is important to note that specific nutritional needs can vary from person to person. In cases of specific health conditions or individual requirements, it is advisable to consult a nutritionist or doctor to receive personalized dietary advice.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lifestyle and Prevention<\/h2>\n\n<p>Maintaining a balance in oxidative stress is important for preserving cellular health and plays a role in preventing various diseases.<\/p>\n\n<p>An active lifestyle that includes regular exercise, a balanced diet, and effective stress management can reduce oxidative stress. It is also important to minimize exposure to harmful environmental factors. <\/p>\n\n<p>It is important to note that excessive or improperly performed exercise can also lead to oxidative stress. During intense physical activity, the body consumes more oxygen and ATP. This can lead to increased production of ROS. Intense training can trigger inflammatory responses in the body, which, while part of the healing process, can also lead to increased ROS formation.   <\/p>\n\n<p>Certain types of training, particularly intermittent activity, can result in an ischemia-reperfusion effect. This means that during training, blood flow to certain tissues is temporarily interrupted and then restored, which can lead to additional oxidative stress. <\/p>\n\n<p>While moderate physical activity is generally beneficial to health, excessive training\u2014especially without sufficient recovery periods\u2014can lead to an imbalance between oxidative stress and the body\u2019s protective mechanisms. It is important for athletes to allow for adequate recovery time and to plan their diet carefully in order to minimize the effects of oxidative stress. <\/p>\n\n<p>Furthermore, stress management is very important in both professional and personal life. Medical diagnoses are assigned according to the World Health Organization\u2019s (WHO) International Classification of Diseases (ICD). A newer version, ICD-11, has already been released and has been in effect since early 2022. For example, burnout is classified there as a disease resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is essential not to place more strain on oneself in both professional and personal life than one can actually handle in the long term. While short, intense periods of stress are normal and occur in many people, care should be taken to ensure that these periods of increased stress do not get out of hand and thus lead to chronic stress.     <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diagnosis and Measurement Methods<\/h2>\n\n<p>The body has various mechanisms for combating oxidative stress. These include enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, which serve to neutralize ROS. Antioxidants from food, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and certain minerals, also help reduce oxidative stress.  <\/p>\n\n<p>All of these parameters can be specifically assessed through specialized blood tests. These tests can provide a detailed breakdown of how efficiently our body\u2019s own defense systems are functioning. A diagnosed micronutrient deficiency can also lead to a compromised immune system.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Furthermore, there are specific parameters that can directly indicate the extent of damage caused by oxidative stress in our bodies. These parameters include oxidized LDL (oxLDL), isoprostanes (IP), carbonyl proteins (CP), malondialdehyde (MDA), and several others. All of these biomarkers can help diagnose oxidative stress. For many doctors, however, a complete and detailed medical history is also an important factor. Someone who is under a great deal of stress in daily life due to professional and\/or personal challenges is highly likely to be affected by oxidative stress.    <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Current Research and Future Prospects<\/h2>\n\n<p>Research on oxidative stress is constantly evolving, with the goal of developing more effective treatments. New approaches in medicine and biotechnology promise a deeper understanding and innovative treatment methods for diseases caused by oxidative stress.
